So I need to get myself situated with a versatile Soft Light option for various HD capturing scenarios, interviews, product placement and all manner of fun creative things. Whilst I would dearly love the Airstar Gaffair 400 ( a circular inflatable softbox with a 400w Joker Ballast) I just don/t have that kind of green man.

I am thinking I might end up with a Chimera Video Pro Lightbank and one of those Chimera Triolet Convertible Omni Lights and a sweet Manfrotto boom stand.

If anyone can "Shed some light" on my quandry or has some sage advise, I would be greatful beyond measure.

I recently used a bunch of chimera soft lighting for 20 interviews i shot with Robert DeNiro for the 2009 Tribeca Film Fest press junket. Ill post a couple pics and frame grabs if you want. it is nice to work with overall, it throws a nice soft light. I already own a bunch of Arri Fresnels as a base kit, but if i were investing on top of those, i would be looking for LED solutions. i own zylight on camera lights (zylight.com) and they have a new 220watt panel with dmx and wireless control. their gear is expensive, but unparralleled in build quality and innovative features. they are, however, expensive..... but lightweight, low power, low heat, and remote controlled..... i would think hard before i made a real serious investment into conventional lighting. i paid $1500 for an arri kit with 1k/chimera, 2-650s, 300, and added 3-150s for 500. i feel pretty prepared, usually i don't use the 1k/chimera, but rather just clothes pin some parchment paper to the barndoors of the 650's, fill with a more diffused 300 and hit hair lights with the 150s..... it depends on the work you do, but that is how i roll right now.....
Thanks ever so much, that make perfect sense. The Zylights rule the whole world and whilst I would love to stay in the LED realm, I have to build up a decent set of equipment to cover me for anything really really quickly with no cash, I have hardly enough gear to do anything (1 zylight z-90 and the lite panels camera mount (lovely little lite - thanks Greggor)

The link below seems like the best deal for what I need and will give me more options pretty cheaply, plus, the whole Green Screen thing is something I really want to explore more (I've already had a gig that required something similar I ended up having to key out in After effects which was MURDER)

Is it a concern that the lights are 3000k though? I want to mimic the effect you get when taking stills and pointing the flash at the ceiling - its almost exactly what I imagine I will get with the soft boxes but the kelvin factor scares me.

Forever in debt (in more ways than one!)

Course, I just did a bit more research and found an even cheaper set, almost the same, but with compact flourescant lighitng thats 5100k which would probably suit me much better and be alot cooler!

one of my buddies recently bought a set of "Cool Lights" and we were both fairly impressed with the build quality. they also did not throw the greenish haze that is common with cheaper flourescent fixtures. overall, seemed like nice bang for the buck. if it helps.
Check out my photo of the kit I got from http://www.skaeser.com/. It's AWESOME. I hope to post a new music video in a week or so but now that I have this, I am able to do some serious post production which of course takes FOR EVRRRRRRRRRR.
